Suppressor Transfers

How a suppressor transfer actually works.

Six defined steps, each tied to a specific federal form. Most of the wait is ATF processing — the part you control takes one visit.

01

You buy the suppressor

From HTX Guns, or from any dealer or online retailer. If you buy elsewhere, tell them the receiving dealer is American Patriot Outdoors LLC in Houston.

02

It transfers to us

The selling dealer files a dealer-to-dealer transfer and ships the item to our licensed premises, where it's logged. This step doesn't involve you and usually moves quickly.ATF Form 3 · 5320.3

03

You come in and we file

We prepare and submit your transfer application electronically. Since 1 January 2026 the transfer tax on a suppressor is $0 — there is no stamp to pay for.ATF Form 4 · 5320.4 · eForms

04

Fingerprints and photo

Done here, same visit, on our 10Scan station — live-scan capture producing the EFT file your eForm needs, and your photo taken at the counter. About thirty seconds of actual fingerprinting.EFT · FD-258

05

ATF reviews it

Now you wait. The item stays in our safe. Timelines vary and are outside any dealer's control — anyone promising you a date is guessing.

06

Approved — come get it

Your stamp is approved. You come in, complete the final paperwork, and take it home.

10Scan — live-scan fingerprint and ATF eForm platform

Official partner

Your Form 4 is filed digitally — start to finish.

We are partnered with 10Scan, the NFA platform that takes the ink cards, the printing and the posting out of the process entirely. There is no paperwork for you to fill in by hand and nothing goes to Washington in an envelope: your application is transmitted to the ATF eForms system electronically before you leave the shop.

  1. Scan your driver’s licence. Your details import straight off the barcode — nothing to hand-write, nothing for us to mistype onto a federal form.
  2. Photo taken on the spot. At the station, or scan a QR code and take it on your own phone.
  3. Fingerprints in about thirty seconds. Three flat captures — left hand, right hand, both thumbs — on an FBI-certified live scanner. No ink, no rolled cards, nothing to smudge.
  4. ATF questions, validated as you answer them. Each field is checked against ATF specification in real time, so an error is caught at the counter instead of coming back as a rejection weeks later.
  5. Your eForms account, set up here. If you do not already have one, you create it during the same session — no separate sign-up to go home and wrestle with.
  6. We review, certify and submit. We check the capture, add the CLEO details, attach your EFT fingerprint file and photo, and file the Form 4 with the ATF electronically.

Sale to submitted eForm usually runs about ten minutes at the counter. Filing as a trust? The trust can be generated in the same session. The prints and photo do have to be taken in person — that part is federal law, not software — but everything after them is digital.

Frequently asked

Suppressor questions

How many times do I have to come in?

Twice. Once to file, get fingerprinted and photographed. Once to pick it up after approval.

Can I take it home while I wait?

No. The item stays with us until your stamp is approved. That's federal law, not shop policy.

Do I still pay a $200 tax stamp?

Not on a suppressor. H.R.1 removed the $200 NFA transfer tax on suppressors, short-barrelled rifles and shotguns, and AOWs with effect from 1 January 2026 — that stamp is now $0. Machine guns and destructive devices still carry the $200 tax. Everything else is unchanged: you still file a Form 4, still get fingerprinted and photographed, and still wait for ATF approval before you can take it home.

Should I file as an individual or set up a trust?

A trust lets more than one person possess the item, but every responsible person needs their own prints and photo. An individual filing is simpler. We can print everyone in one visit — see the NFA Resource Center. For the trust document itself, use an attorney.

Do I have to mail fingerprint cards to the ATF?

No. We are a 10Scan partner, so your prints are taken on a live scanner here and attached to your Form 4 as an electronic EFT file. Nothing is printed and nothing is posted — the application is submitted to ATF eForms before you leave. We can still produce FD-258 cards if you specifically need them for something else, and we can convert an existing card into an EFT rather than reprinting you.

Can I do the whole thing online without coming in?

Not entirely, and be wary of anyone who says otherwise. The filing is fully digital and goes to the ATF electronically. The fingerprints and photo have to be captured in person — that is federal law, not a shop rule. The practical version is: one short visit to file, then one to collect once your stamp is approved.

What if I move before it's approved?

Tell us. Address changes during a pending application need handling, and ignoring it causes problems at approval.
