Who these classes are for

If you have just bought your first firearm — you are the person we most want to see. Most new owners are handed a box and a receipt and left to work it out from the internet. That is how bad habits start.

If you have owned firearms for years — there is usually a gap between "I have shot for a long time" and "I have been trained." Neither is a criticism; they are just not the same thing.

What gets covered

• Safe handling and storage — the four rules, and what they actually mean when you are handling a loaded firearm at home.
• Fundamentals — grip, stance, sight alignment, trigger control. Most accuracy problems are trigger problems.
• Loading, unloading and malfunction clearing — until it is automatic rather than something you think about.
• Ammunition and firearm selection — matching the tool to the purpose rather than to the marketing.
• Maintenance — cleaning and inspection, so your firearm works when you need it to.
